Imagine my shock when I read the article at The Star Online about the increase of men getting under the knife. Sure, plastic surgery has been prevalent in our culture but I can't seem to get it over my head that it is happening right here in Malaysia. I have the perception that it is American and European (although more specifically UK) thing but that could be down to my ignorance. Then again, there was the case of the Datin who died after liposuction at a salon at Bangsar a few years back which was utterly tragic. But what made me even more disheartened was when I read this paragraph:

Sometimes the teenagers are the ones who want the surgery; at other times it is the parents who want it for their kids.

“Parents are more aware of the competition out there. They actually bring their children in for enhancements, like doing a double eyelid and a nose job, to put them in the same or higher category as their peers,” he says.

We are talking about those below the ages of eighteen here.

As the article pointed out, it is a harsh fact that people judge by looks and the research about good-looking people having easier time to find jobs. But what message are the parents, Hollywood and media sending?

It is their ability to carry themselves, competence and brains that keep them in their position. Same with dating and relationships. I have heard this countless of times: Got looks, sure but no personality. Or pretty, what's the use? She doesn't get the job done. The saddest story I've heard so far: A guy who divorced his wife when he found out that she had work done.

(Korean actresses: pre and post surgery)

Without a doubt they are pretty now but how about in ten years time? Or worse, wondering why the children has little to no resemblance to the spouse. I don't even want to imagine the child's self-esteem issues too. To each their own, I'd say.
