Ooo, I like!
I like this picture so much that I can't help putting it here. She looks gorgeous! Apparently, the picture just show up outta nowhere at the fan-site and speculations are rife. But seeing that she is holding a black rose, I think it's for her upcoming new fragrance, Forbidden Rose. And and and! Her 4th album will
finally be released somewhere around September (much to my siblings horror). About time too since my patience is running thin.
My last week was spent rushing long overdue assignments but I managed to squeeze time in to read two distinctly different books: Mr Darcy, Vampyre by Amanda Grange and Tash Aw's The Harmony Silk Factory.
two down, two more to go
When I came upon Mr Darcy, Vampyre, I was clamoring to read it to the extend I grab and ran into the room before my mom could lay her hands on it.
I am a huge Pride and Prejudice fan, an interest I developed after watching Keira Knightley's 2005 adaption (though I hear that the BBC mini-series is far superior compared to the movie) and even more so after reading the book. So imagine my dislike for Amanda's novel. It reads like fan-fiction and I can bet that I can find
better fan-fiction on the much loved classic than this *cough*
novel. Plus, I cannot believe Elizabeth would ever be willing to put up with Darcy's shit like that. One reviewer's words hit the mark:
just sounds like a really, really, REALLY bad vacation (exact quote)
Tash Aw's Whitbread 2005 Winner novel, on the other hand, was excellent and I began to see Malaysia in a different, more positive light. He managed to weave three different perspective (the son, the wife and the best friend) regarding the main character, Johnny Lim. The novel takes place between Singapore and more prominently in Kinta Valley (that's in Perak for the uninformed) when the Japanese was about to lead an invasion on the British ruled Malaya. For those bit by the rare patriotic bug (or not), this is the book to read.
